Hi everyone!

Welcome to the last of our 2021 competition series’ blog posts! This Thursday’s featured writers are Monika Young and Bennett Hinson, from Campbell’s Bay Primary.

Both writers wrote for the Year 4-6 category. Monika placed fourth with her story ‘Rock and a Hard…Cave’, while Bennett placed fifth with his story ‘The Fishing Competition’. Both writers won a book from the lovely Matakana Village Books! Their stories can be seen below along with Stylefit’s grid results.

Well done to both of these young writers!

Rock and a Hard…Cave

Monika Young

The waves were stuck under the cold ice, threatening to break through as they trudged along the freezing sand, tagging their flimsy boat behind them and sitting under sharp looking rocks. The rocks started to crumble and the few people who were on the beach ran onto the snow covered grass as the rocks fell and covered the sand.

“Guys what’s that over there?” Liz pointed to the rockslide. Milly and Joe couldn’t see anything from where they were sitting but if they moved to their left they could see a massive cave-like hole where the rocks used to be.

Uncertainly, they stumbled down the sand to the rocks eager to see what the big hole was hiding. Running down the frozen beach with snow-crusted shoes wasn’t an easy task, especially when you keep tripping over because of your oversized jacket that your Mum made you wear.

Seconds later they were in front of the hole, peering in but only seeing never-ending darkness. Caves had to end somewhere right? The cave was black as night so from the looks of it, it didn’t end anywhere.

The Fishing Competition

Bennett Hinson

Me and John were at the beach with are boat hoping for a good catch and place in the compotition. We headed out on the water but we were discouraged because all the other competitors had huge boats and fishing rods.

About an hour later we were still waiting suddenly john fishing rod started sig saging like crazy!! His fishing rod broke. I jumped out and caught the string. We both pulled with all our might when the fish came into view we saw it was a black marlin!!!

We raced back to port when we got there. Other people had big fish but we both thought that ours was bigger. We went to the weighing place but when we got there another man also had a black marlin!!

I could see the nervousness in john’s eyes. They whighd them at the same time and ars was one kilogram more than his we had won and we could bring home the trophy and a meal for both of our families.
